Energy jobs on Anglesey

Anglesey has a long nuclear history at Wylfa, and the site has now been chosen for the UK's first small modular reactors. With tidal energy off Holy Island, a ferry port at Holyhead and a new freeport, the island offers more energy work than its size suggests. Search vacancies across Ynys Môn and apply free.

From Magnox to small modular reactors

Energy work on Anglesey has long centred on Wylfa, on the north coast west of Cemaes Bay. The Magnox power station's last reactor shut down at the end of 2015 and its fuel had been removed by 2019. Nuclear Restoration Services now manages the site for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, and the old station is entering a long period of care and maintenance before final demolition.

In 2025 the UK government chose Wylfa as the site for Britain's first small modular reactors. Great British Energy – Nuclear, the public body leading the programme, has signed a contract with Rolls-Royce SMR for three reactors, covering site-specific design, regulatory work and planning ahead of a final investment decision. The construction timetable is not fixed yet, so treat any dates you read with care, but Rolls-Royce SMR has said it will step up recruitment.

Tidal power, the port and the freeport

Off the west coast of Holy Island, Menter Môn's Morlais project manages an area of seabed consented for tidal stream energy. When devices go into the water, the scheme will need marine survey, environmental monitoring, electrical and vessel crews. Expect a mix of short contracts during installation and longer roles once devices are generating.

Holyhead is the island's largest town and one of the UK's main ferry ports for Ireland, with Stena Line and Irish Ferries sailing to Dublin. Stena Line owns the port and is a partner, with Isle of Anglesey County Council, in the Anglesey Freeport. Its sites include Prosperity Parc and Parc Cybi near Holyhead, land at M-SParc, Bryn Cefni in Llangefni, the former Shell site at Rhosgoch and the former Octel site at Amlwch, and low-carbon energy is one of its priorities. Freeport status is meant to attract new investment, so watch for manufacturing, logistics and energy roles on these sites as tenants arrive.

Roles on the island

Nuclear engineering and decommissioning

Decommissioning at Wylfa needs radiation protection staff, waste and environmental specialists, maintenance technicians and security personnel. The new build programme adds civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, nuclear safety and licensing specialists, planners and project controls staff, with construction trades to follow later.

Marine and renewable energy

Tidal and offshore projects in the Irish Sea recruit marine technicians, survey crews, ROV and vessel staff, and consenting specialists. Holyhead's port and harbour businesses also need marine engineers, fitters and logistics workers.

Science, digital and support roles

M-SParc, the science park owned by Bangor University near Gaerwen, was set up partly to support the region's low-carbon energy sector and also hosts digital businesses. Jobs there range from engineering and software to project management and community engagement.

Studying and training on Ynys Môn

Coleg Menai, part of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, has campuses in Llangefni and Holyhead and offers engineering and marine technology courses and apprenticeships across its sites. The first Rolls-Royce SMR apprentices based on the island have started their training, an early sign of the skills pipeline for the new reactors. You can check current courses on the Grŵp Llandrillo Menai website.

Bangor University, just across the Menai Strait, runs its School of Ocean Sciences at Menai Bridge on the Anglesey side and has a Nuclear Futures Institute researching materials and modelling. Graduates in ocean science, engineering and environmental science are well placed for survey and consenting roles on marine energy projects.

Welsh language and working life

Welsh is widely spoken on Anglesey, and many public bodies and local employers value Welsh language skills, especially in community engagement, planning and customer-facing roles. If you speak Welsh, say so clearly on your CV and profile.

Large energy projects in rural areas also put weight on local recruitment and training, so living on the island or in Gwynedd can count in your favour when you apply. If you are moving in, mention any family ties or plans to settle locally.

Getting around

The A55 crosses the island from the Britannia Bridge to Holyhead, so most of Anglesey is within easy reach of the mainland by car. Holyhead is the end of the North Wales Coast Line, with Avanti West Coast trains to London Euston via Crewe and Transport for Wales services to Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff.

Wylfa and the north coast are a drive from the A55, and rural buses are limited, so most workers commute by car. Big construction projects often arrange shuttle buses or car sharing, so check the travel arrangements in each advert.
