The ten sectors we cover

Each sector page explains the kind of work involved, the roles employers advertise and the certificates or qualifications that help you get started or move up.

  • Offshore wind – construction, installation, operations and maintenance of wind farms at sea, from turbine technicians to marine coordinators.
  • Renewable energy – onshore wind, solar and other renewable generation, including development, construction and asset management.
  • Oil and gas – offshore and onshore production, maintenance, wells, subsea and decommissioning work.
  • Nuclear – power station operations, new build projects, decommissioning and waste management, often with security clearance.
  • Power and utilities – electricity and gas networks, substations, metering and generation, with many field engineering roles.
  • Hydrogen and CCUS – hydrogen production and carbon capture, utilisation and storage projects, drawing heavily on process and pipeline skills.
  • Energy storage and EV – battery storage sites and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, from design to installation and maintenance.
  • Heat and energy efficiency – heat pumps, heat networks, insulation and retrofit, plus energy assessment and surveying.
  • Domestic energy sales – selling tariffs, solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and insulation to households, in the field, by phone and online.
  • Energy sales – selling gas and electricity contracts and energy services to businesses, through suppliers, brokers and consultancies.

Moving between sectors

Many skills transfer. Electrical and mechanical technicians, control and instrumentation specialists, project managers and health and safety professionals work across several of these sectors. Offshore experience in oil and gas is valued in offshore wind, and process skills carry over into hydrogen and carbon capture.

Employers often value people who understand more than one part of the system, because projects increasingly connect generation, networks and storage. When you create a profile you can select more than one sector, and you can search every energy vacancy at once if you are open to a change.
