Clean Power 2030 and Great British Energy: What They Mean for Jobs
A neutral explainer on the UK's Clean Power 2030 plan, Great British Energy and the Clean Energy Jobs Plan, and what they could mean for energy jobs and skills.
Barrow-in-Furness combines offshore wind operations in the East Irish Sea, long-running gas terminals and a large shipbuilding workforce with deep engineering skills. This page collects energy vacancies across Barrow, Walney, Dalton-in-Furness and Ulverston and explains how local people get into the sector.
Adverts are checked and published as employers join. Create a free profile and switch on employer search so local employers can find you.
Barrow sits at the tip of the Furness peninsula, with the Irish Sea close on most sides and Walney Island across the channel. That position has made it a natural base for offshore energy, and the town's shipbuilding tradition means employers can find people used to precise, safety-critical engineering.
Ørsted has run offshore wind farms off Barrow for many years, and its west coast portfolio includes the Barrow, Walney, Walney Extension and West of Duddon Sands wind farms. The Port of Barrow, owned by Associated British Ports, hosts several operations and maintenance bases for Irish Sea wind projects, supports projects run by Ørsted and Vattenfall, and is the closest port to the Walney wind farms.
Wind farm operations need turbine technicians above all, supported by marine crews, high-voltage engineers, data analysts and planners. Ørsted says most of its west coast team live within an hour of their base, which makes Barrow and the surrounding villages a practical place to settle.
The Barrow gas terminal, on the coast south of the town near Rampside, processes gas from the Morecambe hub fields in the East Irish Sea, operated by Spirit Energy, before it enters the national gas transmission system. These fields have been producing for more than 40 years. Spirit Energy has also proposed reusing the depleted fields to store captured carbon dioxide, a scheme called Morecambe Net Zero that still depends on investment and regulatory decisions.
BAE Systems designs and builds submarines at its Barrow site. It is a defence employer rather than an energy one, but its welders, fitters, electrical engineers, nuclear-trained engineers and project staff share many skills with nuclear and offshore energy, and people do move between the sectors. Sellafield and the West Cumbrian nuclear cluster are also within reach up the coast.
Qualified electricians and mechanical fitters are the core recruits for wind turbine technician roles, usually after completing GWO safety training and an offshore medical. The gas terminal employs process, instrument, electrical and mechanical technicians who work under strict permit-to-work systems, and welders and fabricators are needed for maintenance campaigns and port projects.
Crew transfer vessels carry technicians to turbines daily, so masters, mates, deck crew and marine engineers are in steady demand. Port operations, marine coordination and logistics roles keep vessels, spares and people moving.
Mechanical, electrical, control and reliability engineers work on asset performance and integrity, while graduates join operator schemes or engineering consultancies. Health and safety, planning, procurement, document control and IT roles round out the teams, and these can suit career changers from manufacturing or the shipyard.
Furness College has two campuses in the town: Channelside, a short walk from the centre, and Barrow College on Rating Lane. Its engineering offer includes a T Level, Level 3 study and apprenticeships in fitting, machining, welding, electrical installation and maintenance, and maintenance and operations engineering, all of which map closely onto energy roles. The Furness College engineering courses page lists current options.
The University of Cumbria's Buccleuch Dock campus, next to the BAE Systems site, teaches mechanical engineering among other degrees, so you can study without leaving the peninsula. Gen2 also runs an engineering skills centre in Ulverston. Ørsted has recruited technician apprentices in the UK before, so it is worth watching for new intakes if you are starting out.
Barrow lies at the end of the A590, which runs past Ulverston to junction 36 of the M6 and continues over Jubilee Bridge to Walney Island. Northern trains on the Furness line run to Lancaster and on to Manchester Airport, while the Cumbrian Coast line heads north to Millom, Whitehaven and Carlisle.
Because the town is fairly remote, most people working here live on the peninsula or in nearby towns such as Dalton-in-Furness, Askam and Ulverston. Shifts at the port and gas terminal often start early, and offshore days depend on the weather, so ask how cancelled sailings and standby days are handled before you accept a role.
Begin by searching live energy jobs with Barrow, Walney or Ulverston as the location, then filter by salary, contract type and on-site or hybrid working. Useful sector pages include wind turbine and offshore wind roles, gas production and terminal jobs and carbon capture and hydrogen careers. If you can travel up the coast, compare nuclear and engineering jobs in Whitehaven.

Ørsted's west coast portfolio includes the Barrow, Walney, Walney Extension and West of Duddon Sands wind farms, and the Port of Barrow hosts several operations and maintenance bases for Irish Sea projects, including work for Vattenfall. Check each advert for the exact base and wind farm, because rotas and vessel arrangements differ.
Yes. Welding, fitting, electrical, quality and project skills gained in submarine building transfer well to offshore wind, gas and nuclear work. Expect to add sector certificates, such as GWO safety training for wind, and explain your regulated-site experience clearly on your CV.
It is possible but takes planning. The Furness line runs from Lancaster to Barrow, and the A590 links the town to the M6 at junction 36. Many people who work in Barrow choose to live on the peninsula to cut travel time, especially for early shifts.
It is Spirit Energy's proposal to reuse depleted gas fields in the East Irish Sea to store captured carbon dioxide. It still depends on investment and regulatory decisions, so treat related roles as early-stage until the project is confirmed.
Furness College offers engineering T Levels, Level 3 courses and apprenticeships at its Barrow campuses, and the University of Cumbria teaches mechanical engineering degrees at its Buccleuch Dock campus. Gen2 runs an engineering skills centre in nearby Ulverston.

Most technician and marine roles need GWO safety training and an offshore medical, and vessel crew need the relevant maritime qualifications. Some employers arrange training after an offer, so check each advert for what you need before you start.
Yes. Many technician, marine, port and support roles value trade qualifications, apprenticeships and experience over a degree. Furness College apprenticeships are a common route for school leavers.

If you can travel, include Ulverston, Millom and the West Cumbria coast around Whitehaven and Sellafield, which share contractors and supply-chain firms with Barrow.
